“…The association between gender and asthma was reported in 75 studies [ 16 , 18 , 19 , 21 , 22 , 33 , 35 , 37 , 38 , 40 , 42 , 43 , 47 , 49 , 56 , 58 , 62 , 67 , 70 , 71 , 73 , 74 , 79 , 82 87 , 92 , 93 , 95 , 97 , 99 , 104 , 105 , 107 , 110 , 116 , 118 , 120 , 122 , 124 127 , 130 , 131 , 133 , 135 137 , 139 , 142 , 159 , 170 , 179 , 184 201 ]. Of these, 58 studies have observed male subjects having a higher asthma susceptibility as compared with that of the female subjects significantly [ 16 , 18 , 22 , 37 , 38 , 40 , 47 , 56 , 58 , 62 , 67 , 70 , 71 , 73 , 74 , …”

“…The effect of passive cigarette smoke exposure on the risk of asthma was frequently studied in Asia (63 studies) [ 19 , 27 , 36 , 38 , 40 , 43 , 52 – 54 , 58 , 60 , 62 , 66 , 67 , 70 , 73 , 77 – 79 , 87 , 90 , 92 , 93 , 100 , 101 , 104 , 105 , 107 , 111 , 114 , 116 , 119 , 120 , 124 , 125 , 135 , 136 , 139 , 142 , 145 , 147 , 148 , 160 , 162 , 168 , 170 , 172 , 179 , 182 , 183 , 198 – 200 , 202 210 ]. These studies have used different analytical methods to assess its influence on the susceptibility to asthma, including the number of cigarettes exposed per day [ 27 , 54 , 100 , 120 , 160 , 208 ], the number of persons smoking in the house [ 53 , 105 , 114 , 207 ], smoking in the presence of the subject [ 168 ], the duration of exposure […”

“…Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that such composite measures have weaknesses, as different socioeconomic indicators may point in different directions, as observed in our study. Correspondingly, asthma has for instance been associated with joblessness in Iran [ 24 ] and low income in the United States [ 25 ], whereas an Israeli study on pre-recruit soldiers [ 26 ] found that high SES based on residential area was associated with asthma. Also, asthma is a heterogeneous condition, which may contribute to a complex association between SES and asthma.…”

“…Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common condition of the upper respiratory tract (1) with poor quality of life and known associations with the lower respiratory tract (2). It is known that socioeconomic deprivation can be associated with a higher prevalence of asthma and poorer lung function (3,4). The Chronic Rhinosinusitis Epidemiology Study (CRES) was designed to distinguish differences in socio-economic status, geography, medical/psychiatric co-morbidity, lifestyle and overall quality of life between patients with CRS and healthy controls.…”
