The Moroccan flora is rich in medicinal plants that are commonly used in folk medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The present study was designed to investigate the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as the antioxidant properties of leaves extracts from Globularia alypum L. colected from the Taza region in northeast Morocco. Additionally, the individual phenolics and volatiles of the extracts were also evaluated. The organic extracts of this plant were obtained by Soxhlet extraction using two different solvents, namely ethyl acetate and chloroform. The antioxidant capacity of leaves extracts was measured using DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays; the phenolic profile was determined by HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS analysis, whereas the volatile composition was elucidated by GC-MS. The ethyl acetate extract analysis showed a total of 20 phenolic compounds and the determination of phenolic contents showed a significant value of 56.5 ± 0.61 µg GAE/mg of extract in comparison with the chloroform extract (18.9 ± 0.48 µg GAE/mg of extract). Also, the determination of the flavonoid contents revealed that the ethyl acetate extract contained the highest value (30.2 ± 0.55 µg CE/mg of extract) in comparison with the chloroform extract (18.0 ± 0.36 µg CE/mg of extract). Concerning the antioxidant properties, interesting values were attained for the ethyl acetate extract which exhibited higher antioxidant activity, namely IC50 = 12.3 ± 3.83 µg/mL and IC50 = 37.0 ± 2.45 µg/mL for the DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively, whereas a value of 531.1 ± 17.08 (mg AAE/g DW) was obtained for the FRAP assay. Concerning the volatile profile, a total of 73 compounds were positively detected and among them n-hexadecanoic acid (13.5%) was the most abundant one. The results achieved confirm the important role of this plant as a source of natural antioxidants.

In recent years, the food, pharma, and cosmetic industries have shown considerable interest in bioactive molecules of marine origin that show high potential for application as nutraceuticals and therapeutic agents. Astaxanthin, a lipid-soluble and orange-reddish-colored carotenoid pigment, is one of the most investigated pigments. Natural astaxanthin is mainly produced from microalgae, and it shows much stronger antioxidant properties than its synthetic counterpart. This paper aims to summarize and discuss the important aspects and recent findings associated with the possible use of crustacean byproducts as a source of astaxanthin. In the last five years of research on the crustaceans and their byproducts as a source of natural astaxanthin, there are many new findings regarding the astaxanthin content in different species and new green extraction protocols for its extraction. However, there is a lack of information on the amounts of astaxanthin currently obtained from the byproducts as well as on the cost-effectiveness of the astaxanthin production from the byproducts. Improvement in these areas would most certainly contribute to the reduction of waste and reuse in the crustacean processing industry. Successful exploitation of byproducts for recovery of this valuable compound would have both environmental and social benefits. Finally, astaxanthin’s strong biological activity and prominent health benefits have been discussed in the paper.

Microalgae as Haematococcus pluvialis produce lipid metabolites of great interest for different industries as the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, among other. Currently, one of the main limitations for the massive commercialization of these metabolites are the low yields between cell growth and the production of lipid metabolites. Thus, a better understanding of culture parameters that allow to get a balance between both variables is needed. Herein we evaluated the effect of Bold’s Basal Medium (BBM) on the production of lipid metabolites of high biotechnological value in Haematococcus pluvialis UTEX 2505. A factorial experimental design of 32 was used whereby the concentrations of the nitrogen and phosphorus source (0.2, 0.6 and 1.0 g / l) in the BBM culture medium were varied. Cell growth was measured, showed the highest concentration (1.148±0.842 g/l) for the treatment with the highest nitrate and phosphate content (a concentration of 1.0 g/l for both). The Astaxanthin content showed a maximum value of 76.22 ± 3.02 µg/mL for treatment with low nitrate (0.2 g/L) and medium phosphate (0.6 g/L). The antioxidant capacity was determined by the ORAC method, achieving superior values to those found in the literature for compounds such as vitamins E and C. The results suggested that low concentrations of nutrients, nitrate and phosphate have a positive effect on the concentration of lipid metabolites and affirm that the biomass of H. pluvialis UTEX 2505 is an excellent source of antioxidants and rich in essential fatty acids for human nutrition.
