Associations of snoring frequency and intensity in pregnancy with time‐to‐delivery

Abstract: Background Sleep disordered-breathing (SDB) is linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, little is known about the association of SDB with timing of delivery. We examined the association of snoring frequency, a key SDB marker, and snoring intensity, a correlate of SDB severity, with time-to-delivery among a cohort of pregnant women. Methods In this prospective cohort study, 1,483 third trimester pregnant women were recruited from the University of Michigan prenatal clinics. Women completed a questionnai… Show more

“…The linear trend, Friston 24-parameter and signals from WM and CSF were removed as nuisance variables to reduce head motion, respiratory and cardiac effects. Global signal regression was not performed because of concerns about increasing negative correlations (Murphy et al, 2009 ; Weissenbacher et al, 2009 ) and possible distortions (Gotts et al, 2013 ; Chi et al, 2016 ; Liu et al, 2017 ). After nuisance regression, the functional volumes were then normalized to MNI152 space in 3 × 3 × 3 mm 3 voxel resolution by using the transformation information acquired from the previous DARTEL step (Figure 2 ).…”

“…It is likely their SDB preceded pregnancy and they were not aware of it, or not sufficiently concerned to seek medical investigation. It remains unclear whether pre-existing SDB or the development of SDB in pregnancy is more problematic for pregnancy outcomes, [55][56][57] however this exclusion criteria was unlikely to impact our results.…”

“…The cardinal symptom, habitual snoring 3 nights per week, affects up to 35% of women in the third trimester [4,5], and up to 85% of women with pre-eclampsia [6], while objective measures of OSA are estimated to affect between 8% and 26% of pregnant women [7,8]. SDB is a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes, including gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia [4,9,10], hyperglycaemia [11][12][13], impaired fetal growth [14][15][16][17][18][19], and early-term and/or preterm birth [9,14,[20][21][22]. SDB is exacerbated by obesity, advanced gestation, and the supine sleep position [23], all of which are themselves associated with an increased risk of late stillbirth [24].…”
