Associations of sleep quality and sleep duration with frailty and pre-frailty in an elderly population Rugao longevity and ageing study

Abstract: Background: Previous studies suggest that poor sleep quality or abnormal sleep duration may be associated with frailty. Here we test the associations of sleep disturbances with both frailty and pre-frailty in an elderly population. Methods: Participants included 1726 community-dwelling elders aged 70-87 years. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep disturbances. Frailty was defined using phenotype criteria. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratio of the associations.… Show more

“…The female gender has the greatest risk of experiencing symptoms of mental health disorders. These results support a study previously conducted on 2,091 and 285 adults in China after several weeks related to Covid19 infection in Wuhan, proclaimed the PTSD prevalence of 4.6% and 7%, respectively, often linked to female sex and bad sleep quality (20)(21).…”

“…In China, around 37.75% of the older adults living in urban areas are suffering from poor sleep quality, such as sleep disorder, sleep disturbance, and insomnia [ 16 , 17 ]. A cross-sectional study performed in urban China report similar results that poor sleep quality and long sleep duration increased the prevalence of pre-frailty and frailty [ 18 ]. Given the concerning relationship between poor sleep quality and frailty, questions still remain unanswered regarding the underlying pathways between sleep quality and frailty among older adults in rural China.…”

“…Therefore, it is plausible that certain sleep characteristics, like hours of sleep or sleeping disorders, could be related to incident frailty [ 4 ]. In fact, recent studies have linked sleep to frailty, including sleep complaints [ 5 ], sleeping less than the number of recommended hours [ 6 8 ] and/or sleeping too much [ 7 12 ], insomnia [ 6 ], or low quality of sleep [ 9 , 12 , 13 ]. Nonetheless, most studies are cross sectional and until now, the results have not been conclusive.…”
