Associations of Serum Leptin with Atopic Asthma and Allergic Rhinitis in Children

Abstract: Our results indicate that a higher serum leptin level has stronger association with mild-to-moderate persistent AS compared with AR. Hence, serum leptin may be a stronger predictor for childhood AS compared with AR. Among the asthmatic children, higher serum leptin levels also showed stronger associations with female gender and being overweight.

“…Recent studies have suggested that the influence of leptin on increasing risk of asthma varied by sex. 33,35,38,39 In the present study, it was found that independent of having asthma, leptin levels of girls were higher than in boys in all groups except obese asthmatics. However, a similar sex difference concerning adiponectin levels was not evident.…”

“…This finding suggests that increased leptin levels in girls are related to sex, regardless of asthma. Some other studies have also revealed that higher serum leptin levels are strongly associated with female sex in asthmatic children 17,30,38,39 and adults. 36 In contrast, another study found higher serum leptin levels in asthmatic prepubertal boys, particularly in atopics.…”

“…The influence of leptin on increasing asthma risks varied by gender has been reported [31]. Among asthmatic children, higher serum leptin levels were shown to have stronger associations with female gender [32]. On the other hand, in a case control study conducted in 102 prepubertal asthmatic children, significant difference was observed in serum leptin levels between asthmatic and healthy children.…”

“…The Taiwanese study followed adolescents prospectively for 12 months, and reported that obese adolescent females but not males were at higher risk of developing asthma [24]. Interestingly, higher serum leptin levels were associated with obesity, female gender and asthma [25•]. Leptin, which plays a key role in body weight regulation, promotes Th1 immune responses and increases the production of pro-inflammatory mediators [25•].…”

“…Interestingly, higher serum leptin levels were associated with obesity, female gender and asthma [25•]. Leptin, which plays a key role in body weight regulation, promotes Th1 immune responses and increases the production of pro-inflammatory mediators [25•]. The gender dimorphism of the obese-asthma phenotype is supported by the finding that asthma impairment related to obesity is highest among women 12 to 44 years of age [26, 27].…”
