Associations of low hand grip strength with 1 year mortality of cancer cachexia: a multicentre observational study

Abstract: Backgrounds Hand grip strength (HGS) is one of diagnose criteria factors of sarcopenia and is associated with the survival of patients with cancer. However, few studies have addressed the association of HGS and 1 year mortality of patients with cancer cachexia. Methods This cohort study included 8466 patients with malignant solid tumour from 40 clinical centres throughout China. Cachexia was diagnosed using the 2011 International cancer cachexia consensus. The hazard ratio (HR) of all cancer cachexia mortality… Show more

“…This phenomenon also suggests that the HGS/W is an effective and vital parameter for RMM assessment, which was consistent with a previous study that indicated that HGS could provide significant prognostic information about complication and mortality risks for medical inpatients at nutritional risk, and help to recognize patients gaining most from medical nutrition treatment [ 32 ]. Moreover, a multicenter observational study proved the association between low HGS and a poor survival probability in one year of patients with cancer cachexia [ 33 ]. According to the latest research, HGS/W exhibited better accuracy in predicting a prognosis than using HGS alone [ 17 ].…”

“…This was a prospective, cross-sectional, multicenter cohort study-”INSCOC” (Investigation on Nutrition Status and its Clinical Outcome of Common Cancers) ( 27 ), which collected the clinical information from patients with cancer in China between 2013 and 2021. The INSCOC cohort prospectively collected data on nutrition and clinical outcomes in patients with cancer, and the cohort was followed up for 8 years.…”

“…Hand grip strength (HGS) is a simple and effective method for measuring muscle strength, which is easy to perform and has low associated costs. Reportedly, HGS can provide important additional prognostic information for malignancies 19,20 . Therefore, this study aimed to develop a simple and practical HGS‐based CXI (H‐CXI) to predict the risk of cancer cachexia and to evaluate its short‐term and long‐term potential prognostic utility in patients with cancer.…”
