Associations of leptin gene polymorphisms with production traits in pigs

Abstract: The associations of leptin (LEP) gene polymorphisms C798T, T2411C, T3266G and T3469C with production traits were investigated in a F2 pig population produced by divergent crosses. The statistical model included genotype, sex, batch and genotype by sex interaction as fixed effects and sire as random effect. Polymorphism C798T was associated with variation in total teat number (p < 0.02) and left teat number (p < 0.03), and polymorphism T3469C was associated with weight at 21 days (p < 0.03), 42 days (p < 0.05),… Show more

“…Van der Lende et al (2005) reported that polymorphisms of LEP gene in pig were associated with a variation of the feed intake, ADG and BFT other than of reproductive traits. Conflicting results have been reported in association studies of LEP polymorphisms with the same phenotypic traits, and these probably depend from the experimental population used in the study (Jiang AND Gibson, 1999;Chen et al, 2004;Szydlowski et al, 2004;Stefanon et al, 2004;De Oliveira et al, 2006). Conflicting results for the SNPs of LEP gene were also observed in the present study.…”

“…A major focus for the discovery of polymorphisms in production animals has been to identify those associated with traits that are considered to be economically important such as lean muscle accretion, feed efficiency, and growth (Franco et al, 2005;de Oliveira Peixoto et al, 2006;Houston et al, 2006;Verner et al, 2007;Nie et al, 2008). Far fewer studies have identified polymorphisms associated with overall animal health, specifically as it relates to bone health.…”
