Background and objectivesRecent studies have shown that hyperuricemia is commonly associated with dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Elevated serum uric acid has been demonstrated to be associated with obesity in the adult population in many countries; however, there is still a lack of evidence for the Bangladeshi population. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of hyperuricemia and determine the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and obesity among the Bangladeshi adults.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, blood samples were collected from 260 adults (142 males and 118 females) and analyzed for SUA and lipid profile. All participants were categorized as underweight (n = 11), normal (n = 66), overweight (n = 120) and obese (n = 63) according to the body mass index (BMI) scale for the Asian population. Based on SUA concentration the participants were stratified into four quartiles (Q1: < 232 μmol/L, Q2: 232–291 μmol/L, Q3: 292–345 μmol/L and Q4: > 345 μmol/L).ResultsThe mean age and BMI of the participants were 32.5 ± 13.3 years and 24.9 ± 3.8 kg/m2, respectively. The average level of SUA was 294 ± 90 μmol/L with a significant difference between males and females (p < 0.001). Overall, the estimated prevalence of hyperuricemia was 9.3% with 8.4% in male and 10.2% in female participants. There were significant increases in the prevalence of obesity (17.4%, 22.2%, 28.6% and 31.8%, respectively, p < 0.01 for trend) across the SUA quartiles. A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that SUA quartiles were independently associated with the presence of obesity (p < 0.01).ConclusionPresent study indicates a significant positive relationship between SUA and obesity among the Bangladeshi adults. Therefore, routine measurement of SUA is recommended in obese individuals to prevent hyperuricemia and its related complications.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels, as well as the cumulative risk of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) regulation in the Chinese adult population after 6 years of follow-up. Methods: A total of 1360 apparently healthy Chinese men and women who completed a community-based health examination survey and did not have IFG in central China in 2010 and 2016 were included in this study. The patients were divided into four groups according to their baseline GGT (in quartiles). The relationship between GGT levels and FBG levels was examined using general linear regression models. The effect of the GGT level on the risk of IFG was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. The first quartile group of GGT levels was set as the dummy variable in the model, and the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of the remaining quartile groups relative to the first quartile group were obtained. Results: After 6 years of follow-up, 16.4% (188/1148) of participants were diagnosed with IFG. The cumulative incidence of IFG in the four groups according to their baseline GGT levels (in quartiles) was 7.7%, 16.1%, 15.8%, and 26.8%, respectively. Based on the Cox multiple regression, the hazard ratio for IFG increased by 28.9% for each unit of increase in the baseline GGT level after adjusting for the confounding factors. The GGT levels of participants in the first quartile were used as the reference group. The relative risks of IFG in the second, third, and fourth quartiles of GGT were 1.70, 1.55, and 2.46, respectively (P = 0.005). Conclusions: GGT was positively associated with the risk of IFG and can be used as an indicator to assess whether a patient may develop prediabetes.

Background Hyperuricemia is often associated with oxidative stress and vitamin E alters uric acid level in hypertensive rats, consequently, vitamin E may have a significant role in non-hypertensive hyperuricemia. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate anti-hyperuricemic activity of vitamin E on potassium oxonate-induced hyperuricemic rats. Methods Eighteen adult Wistar Albino rats of similar weights were equally divided into group I (normal control), group II (disease control) and group III (treatment control). Group I received 0.5ml normal saline per oral while group II and group III received potassium oxonate (250 mg/kg-intraperitoneal) on day 1, 3, 6, 10, 13 and 15. Group III also received vitamin E (200 mg/kg-per oral) for 15 days. Blood samples were collected through retro orbital plexus from all the animals on day 15 to evaluate uric acid, creatinine, total cholesterol, triglycerides, albumin and blood urea nitrogen, as well joint diameter, and kidneys’ weight was also evaluated. Result We observed a statistically significant rise (p<0.05 or p<0.001) in all the parameters and a significant decline in serum albumin level (p<0.001) in group II as compared to group I, but no significant difference (p>0.05) in all the parameters between group I and III. In contrast to this, a significant reduction in all the parameters (p<0.05 or p<0.001) and significant increase in serum albumin level (p<0.001) were observed in group III as compared to group II. Conclusion Our findings suggest that vitamin E has an anti-hyperuricemic activity against hyperuricemia induced rats.
