Associations of Apelin, Visfatin, and Urinary 8-Isoprostane With Severe Hypertension in African Americans: The MH-GRID Study

Abstract: In our community sample of AA, there were increased odds of SH with increased levels of urinary 8-isoprostane and visfatin, but not with apelin.

“…Clinical studies regarding the association between of 8-iso-PGF 2α levels and blood pressure or hypertension are scarce. 58,59 Higher plasma 8-iso-PGF 2α levels in the patients with resistant hypertension, as compared to wellcontrolled hypertensive patients, were reported by de Faria et al 17 The opposite results were yielded by the urine isoprostane studies. A positive association was established in the study of Horbal et al, whereas Melton et al, whilst measuring urine four F2-isoprostanes, established no prospective associations, neither for systolic nor diastolic blood pressure.…”

It has also been proposed that oxidative stress amplifies blood pressure elevation in the presence of other prohypertensive factors whose clustering is encountered in the MetS subjects.…”

“…Our systematic search identified 8 studies that included 1693 adults (974 with hypertension) in Asia (3 studies), Europe (4 studies), and United States (1 study) (▶table 1) [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. Most studies included middle-age adults, with 5 studies with a mean age ≥ 50 years.…”

“…Dahl et al firstly reported that visfatin was markedly enhanced in symptomatic carotid atherosclerotic plaques [19]. Subsequently, various studies provided that visfatin was closely related with cardiovascular disease [20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. Horbal et al showd that the odds of severe hypertension were in accordance with the levels of visfatin [21].…”
