Associations between positive memory count and hazardous substance use in a trauma‐exposed sample: Examining the moderating role of emotion dysregulation

Abstract: Objectives Research has demonstrated links between autobiographical memory retrieval and hazardous substance use. However, limited work has examined relations between positive autobiographical memories and hazardous substance use, as well as moderating factors influencing these relations. Thus, we examined the potential moderating roles of negative and positive emotion dysregulation in the relations between count of retrieved positive memories and hazardous substance use (alcohol and drug use separately). Meth… Show more

“…This study adopted the Johnson–Neyman technique and Simple slope analyses to clarify the moderation effect, following He and Ismail (2023), Compton et al (2023), and Sarintohe et al (2023). This approach identified significant thresholds for the direct impact of TREND on Z -score across varying FO levels, as illustrated in Figure 1.…”

“…In addition, to explain the moderation effect clearly, this study followed He and Ismail (2023); Compton et al (2023); Sarintohe et al (2023); Gorgol et al (2022) to implement the Johnson-Neyman technique to identify the threshold of significance for the simple effects of political stability on FDI for different levels of the moderator (TO). The Johnson-Neyman regions are provided in Fig.…”

“…Also, substance use may influence positive memory processes (e.g., result in less specific and integrated memories; Wright et al, 2022). Additionally, retrieving detailed positive memories may increase cravings for or engagement in substance use in certain instances, such as when the content of positive memories highlights beneficial impacts of substance use or when individuals use substances to regulate intense emotions that are experienced when retrieving positive memories (Compton et al, in review; Contractor, Banducci, & Jin, 2022; Gisquet-Verrier & Le Dorze, 2019). Together, the current study findings were contextualized in regard to these sample characteristics.…”
