Introduction Children encounter several types of sensory input from their daily living environments and take in and process this information using their sensory systems. Few studies have considered the impact of children’s sensory preferences on their activity participation. This study investigated the relationship between children’s sensory processing factors and the daily activities they chose to participate in. Method Twenty-three parents of typically developing school-aged children completed the Sensory Processing Measure Home Form and Children Participation Questionnaire-School. Spearman correlations were conducted between sensory preferences and participation, as measured by frequency, intensity, independence level, children’s enjoyment and parental satisfaction. Regression models were also completed between each of the participation measures and sensory processing factors. Results Sensory processing accounted for 69.8% ( p = 0.001) of participation diversity’s total variance with unique contributions made by body awareness (proprioception) and planning and ideas ( p = 0.040); 45.9% ( p = 0.024) of participation intensity’s variance with touch made a unique contribution ( p = 0.030) and 42.4% ( p = 0.034) of participation independence’s variance with body awareness (proprioception) made a unique contribution ( p = 0.038). Conclusion Considerations should be made for sensory processing screening for typically developing children and the impacts this could potentially have on their daily participation.

Introduction: Participation in meaningful occupations within our everyday environments contributes to health and wellbeing. Therefore, it is important to study perceived meaning and its interrelated factors. The perceived meaning of occupations is the emotional and cognitive qualities people attach to their occupations. However, research on the perceived meaning of occupations among children is limited. The meaning of occupations may be related to personal factors concerning the child. Hence, this study aimed to assess the correlations between socio-emotional characteristics and executive functions of typically developing children and their perceived meaning of occupations-value, challenge, and sense of time and autonomy. Methods: A cross-sectional study comprising 80 children (6-13 years old) and their parents was conducted. The parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function. The children completed the Perceived Meaning of Occupation Questionnaire and the Verbal Working Memory test. Results: Children with higher scores on the SDQ-internalised behaviours and lower working memory-perceived their everyday activities as more challenging (r = .300, r = −.244, p < .05, respectively). Children with higher scores on the SDQ-prosocial behaviours-attached higher value to their everyday activities (r = .23, p < .05). However, increases in executive function difficulties were found to decrease the perceived value (r = .24, p < .05) and to alter the perceived sense of time (r =. 27, p < .05). Conclusions: The meaning children attach to their everyday activities changes when they experience socio-emotional and executive difficulties. Therefore, to inspire positive meaning of occupations among children, practitioners should consider the child's socio-emotional and cognitive strengths and difficulties.

BackgroundAccording to a biopsychosocial approach to health and disability, participation at home and functional skills are important components of the functioning. Therefore, knowledge about interactions between these components allows for targeting specific interventions.ObjectiveThis study investigated whether participation opportunities (frequency and involvement) for children/adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) in a realistic environment at their own home are associated with the functional skills related to the domains of Daily Activities, Mobility, Social/Cognitive and Responsibility.MethodsThis was an observational study. Forty‐eight children/adolescents with DS participated (mean age: 10.73 ± 3.43; n = 27 females). Participants were evaluated using the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM‐CY) home environment setting (raw frequency and engagement scores) and Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory speedy version (PEDI‐CAT‐SV) (continuous score).ResultsSignificant and positive correlations were found between the frequency of participation at home with Daily Activities (ro = 0.320), Social/Cognitive (ro = 0.423) and Responsibility (ro = 0.455). For involvement, significant and positive correlations were found with Daily Activities (ro = 0.297), Social/Cognitive (ro = 0.380) and Responsibility (ro = 0.380). For the PEDI‐CAT‐SV Mobility, no significant correlation was found.ConclusionsHigher frequency and involvement of participation at home are associated with greater functional skills assessed, except for Mobility. This study provided pioneering insights about the relationships between the level of home participation and functional skills in DS, generating evidence that could guide approaches to participation‐focused intervention.
