Associations between endotoxin‐induced metabolic changes and temperament in Brahman bulls,

Abstract: The influence of temperament on the alteration of metabolic parameters in response to a lipopolysaccharide(LPS) challenge was investigated. Brahman bulls were selected based on temperament score. Bulls (10 months; 211±5kg BW; n = 6, 8 and 7 for Calm, Intermediate and Temperamental groups, respectively) were fitted with indwelling jugular catheters to evaluate peripheral blood concentrations of glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN),non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), insulin, epinephrine and cortisol before and aft… Show more

“…Not surprisingly, circulating BUN is consistently increased in pig models of endotoxemia (Myers et al, 1997;Bruins et al, 2003). Results from ruminants generally agree (Burdick Sanchez et al, 2014), but are more variable (Waggoner et al, 2009a,b;Zarrin et al, 2014), probably due to the contribution of rumen derived ammonia. Further, changes in BUN may be masked by hypophagia-induced alterations in substrate delivery (i.e., AA) and changes to the rumen microbiome (Jing et al, 2014).…”

“…The Wako Autokit for Glucose (Code-No. 439-90901; Wako Diagnostics, Richmond, VA) was used to determine the glucose concentrations of samples as described by Burdick Sanchez et al (2014). Absorbance was measured at 505 nm with a spectrophotometer.…”

“…The enzymatic HR Series NEFA-HR (2) assay (Wako Diagnostics, Richmond, VA) was modified to fit a 96-well format and used to determine NEFA concentrations as described by Burdick Sanchez et al (2014). The minimum detectable concentration for this assay was 0.0014 mmol/L and the intra-and interassay CV were 7.16% and 11.26%, respectively.…”

“…LPS-induced liver injury has been used to mimic the acute-phase response and analyse the mechanisms of hepatic injury (Masaki et al, 2004;Iwasaki et al, 2008). While the responses of the innate immune and stress systems following an LPS challenge have been well studied, the alterations in carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism in the liver remain largely unknown (Burdick Sanchez et al, 2014).…”
