Associations between diet quality, blood pressure, and glucose levels among pregnant women in the Asian megacity of Jakarta

Abstract: Background The prevalence of gestational hypertension and diabetes in pregnancy is increasing worldwide. Diet is a modifiable factor that may influence these conditions, but few studies have examined the association between diet quality and blood pressure and glucose profiles among pregnant women. Data are especially scarce for women in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where 90% of global pregnancies occur, and in urban settings. We, therefore, assessed these associations among 174 pregnant women in t… Show more

“…Although dietary sources of vitamin D were not commonly and adequately consumed and vitamin D-fortified foods were limited in low-middle income countries, abundant sunlight in Indonesia and Malaysia should allow direct sun exposure to the skin and become a potential source of the vitamin D to meet its requirement. However, vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were widespread, not only among pregnant women ( 9 , 20 , 21 ), but also across population from newborns ( 103 ), children ( 104 ), adolescents ( 105 , 106 ), adults ( 22 ), and elderly ( 107 ) in these countries. Countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa were frequently reported to have a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiencies.…”

“…Dietary supplements consumption was not a common practice among pregnant and lactating women in Indonesia and Malaysia ( 9 , 19 , 20 ), unless it was given by the health workers. A recent large survey among Malaysian adults found only 28.1% of women were more likely to consume the vitamin/mineral supplements ( 101 ).…”

“…Secondly, we used CPG instead of VPG (the gold standard) for the screening examination. However, CPG has been proven to be acceptable for diabetes screening in pregnancy areas with limited resources [ 13 ] and was used in a similar study in Jakarta, Indonesia [ 30 ]. Thirdly, due to the small number of TDP cases detected in our study population, this study could have been underpowered to measure a precise rate of DR and nephropathy in pregnant women with TDP.…”

“…Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is characterized by insufficient insulin secretion and impaired glucose intolerance during pregnancy (1). It has been estimated that over the past 20 years the worldwide prevalence of GDM has been up to 14% of pregnancies, though estimates may vary among regions depending on diagnostic criteria (2). GDM has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes among pregnant women including dystocia, macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, and birth injuries (3).…”
