Associations between Dementia Outcomes and Depressive Symptoms, Leisure Activities, and Social Support

Abstract: Background: Social relations and depressive symptoms are intertwined. They both predict subsequent dementia, but only few studies on the association between social life aspects and subsequent dementia exist. Methods: The risk of subsequent dementia was estimated over 2 follow-up assessments, each 18 months apart, depending on leisure activity, social support (general scale and the 3 factors emotional support, practical support, and social integration), and depressive symptoms, using proportional hazard models … Show more

“…As discussed above, the impact of the APOE e4 allele on dementia onset is well established and there are several studies that have investigated the relationship between social networks and the risk of developing dementia. However, studies that jointly examine the influence of the APOE e4 allele and social networks are scarce (Heser et al, 2014;Saczynski et al, 2006;Salinas et al, 2017). Furthermore, to our knowledge there are relatively few studies that explicitly examine the possible interaction effect between aspects of social networks and genetic risk factors on the development of dementia.…”

“…This process can minimize the abilities and social status of neurologically impaired older people (3) . The incidence and prevalence of depressive symptoms is also strongly associated with this reality, hence the consequent decrease in the elderly person's quality of life (4) .…”
