Associations between Croatian Adolescents’ Use of Sexually Explicit Material and Risky Sexual Behavior: A Latent Growth Curve Modeling Approach

Abstract: Objectives. The aim of this bio-behavioral longitudinal study was to assess the association between dynamics of SEM use and risky sexual behavior among Croatian adolescents.Methods. The data were collected during 2015-2018 period (n = 577). “…A similar situation was found in users with 15 days or more of preventive social isolation, resulting in a higher consumption of the same types of online sexual material; internet pages, mobile chat applications, and social networks, the least frequent were video calls, video portals, online sex forums, and email. This result can be explained by the fact that in internet pages and social networks such as WhatsApp it is relatively easy to find sexually explicit audiovisual material that is shared among users, and so the potential reach of online sexual material and people is very high because with just a few clicks this information reaches anyone connected to one of these platforms (Koletić et al, 2019).…”

“…In this vein, recent research on the use of online sexual material suggests that explicit sex viewing may be negatively related to risky sexual behavior, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), incorrect and inconsistent condom use, multiple sexual partners, sexual activity with drug use, and early sexual debut (Eversole, Berglas, Deardorff, & Constantine, 2017;Hald, Kuyper, Adam, & de Wit, 2013;Hernández Torres, Benavides Torres, Onofre Rodríguez, & Jiménez Vázquez, 2018;Koletić, Štulhofer, Tomić, & Knežević Ćuća, 2019;Shallo & Mengesha, 2019).…”

“…When controlling for an important psychological confounder such as risktaking propensity, adolescents reporting early and regular pornography use tended to initiate sexual activity earlier and indicated to have had nearly double the number of sexual partners compared to peers in a low pornography use trajectory. However, other investigations, among Croatian adolescents, starting from the same theoretical assumptions did not, or only to a limited extent, find effects of pornography use on sexual risk taking-no condom use when having sex, sex under the influence of drugs and alcohol, having multiple partners, etc., -or on enhancing permissive sexual attitudes, implying that porn's script activation and effects may be specific to the domain under study and the cultural context in which the study is undertaken (Koletić et al, 2019a(Koletić et al, , 2019bMatković et al, 2018).…”

“…However, despite this difference in mean levels, perceived realism does not seem to differ between gender groups [ 27 , 54 ]. Some gender-specific findings were found regarding the associations of pornography use with sexuality-related attitudes and sexual behavior [ 16 , 28 , 54 , 55 ]. Moreover, evidence of a link between exposure to sexually explicit material and risky sexual behavior in terms of condom-less sex was found for sexual minority men [ 56 , 57 ].…”
