Associations Between Casein Haplotypes and Milk Yield Traits

Abstract: The genotyping of 13 sires and 250 of their sons for casein polymorphisms revealed 10 different haplotypes for Norwegian Cattle. Associations between haplotypes and yields of protein, milk, and fat were studied using a granddaughter design. Three subsets of data containing families with haplotypes 1, 5, and 10 were analyzed independently and denoted by analyses 1, 5, and 10, respectively. In addition, all sire families of all haplotypes were pooled and analyzed in analysis T. No associations were found between… Show more

“…5 Deregressed proofs for final score reported on the original scale, and linear scores reported on a relative scale. 6 The approximate number of effective daughters was obtained from numbers of daughters and herds. Daughter yield deviations ( DYD) for the HolsteinFriesian bulls were computed in March 1996 and were obtained from the Italian Holstein-Friesian Breeder Association, ANAFI (Associazione Nazionale Allevatori Frisona Italiana, Cremona, Italy).…”

“…The aim of using deregression was to regenerate the right-hand side of the mixed model equations. These regenerated values with the fixed effects absorbed and adjusted for the mean were a measurement of the DYD (15) or the corrected mean deviation of a daughter group. Each trait was deregressed separately.…”

“…In several association studies the effects of casein haplotypes on milk production traits were estimated (Lien et al 1995;Braunschweig et al 2000;Ikonen et al 2001;Boettcher et al 2004). Other groups reported the presence of QTLs for milk production traits linked to the casein gene cluster (Velmala et al 1999;Schnabel et al 2005).…”
