Associations between Carotid Artery Plaque Score, Carotid Hemodynamics and Coronary Heart Disease

Abstract: Background: The carotid artery plaque score (PS) is an independent predictor of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). This study aims to evaluate the combination of PS and carotid hemodynamics to predict CHD. Methods: A total of 476 patients who underwent carotid ultrasonography and coronary angiography were divided into two groups depending on the presence of CHD. PS, carotid intima-media thickness, and carotid blood flow were measured. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to establish the b… Show more

“…Clinically asymptomatic atherosclerosis known as a systemic disease can be characterized with CV imaging in specific end‐organs as in coronary or carotid arteries . Several characteristics of carotid US have been measured to extrapolate abnormal findings to CVD . Identification of carotid artery plaque (CP) represents a surrogate of very high CVR.…”

“…Chung et al 33 in the I-Lan Longitudinal Aging Study found that low PS and end diastolic velocities were associated with cognitive dysfunction as assessed by mini-Mental State Examination and neuropsychological tests in 1684 Taiwanese subjects without cognitive impairment at baseline. Zhang et al 34 found in their patient study that carotid artery plaque score (CAPS), combined with the PS velocity of the right internal carotid artery has a greater predictive value for CHD than CAPS alone.…”

“…In a 6-year follow up study, IMT did not predict coronary risk, whereas total plaque area was noted as a robust predictor of coronary risk ( 20 ). In contrast, PS was associated with coronary heart disease ( 21 ), and PS more closely represented the atherosclerotic condition of the carotid artery compared to IMT ( 11 ) because of its wider range of observations in terms of carotid arteries. In the current research, it was unveiled how high PS could be markedly associated with WMH, and we also identified a dose-response relationship between frequency of WMH and PS, independent of factors mentioned earlier.…”
