Associations Between Attempted Suicide, Violent Life Events, Depressive Symptoms, and Resilience in Adolescents and Young Adults

Abstract: Were violent/nonviolent traumatic life events and victimization by/witnessing violence associates of attempted suicide among depressed adolescents who were also less resilient at early adulthood? The present study examined a subset of mainly depressed, age- and gender-matched, adolescents derived from a representative sample of 2464 students (T1, mean age = 13.7 years) followed up after 1 year (T2Q) and reassessed 5 years later (T3, n = 252, mean age = 20.0 years, 73% participation), with a questionnaire, incl… Show more

“…Resilience is associated with lower suicide risk [50][51][52][53]. To assess the relationship between RS-14 scores and RASS scores bivariate correlation analyses were performed followed by partial correlation analyses adjusted for age, sex, education, family status, disease type and comorbidities;…”

“…Low resilience has been found in abstinent substance dependent patients who had attempted suicide [51], while patients with systemic lupus erythematosus at risk of committing suicide presented the lowest resilience scores [52]. It has been also reported that resilience may be a protective factor mitigating the risk of suicidal behavior associated with childhood trauma [50], while resilience has been found to act as a moderator of lifetime violent events and attempted suicide in adolescents and young adults, even in the presence of antecedent depression [53]. Our findings further support the link between resilience and suicidality and provide additional evidence with regard to the validity of both RS-14 as well as the newly introduced scale for the assessment of suicidality risk, i.e.…”

“…There appears to be a consensus in research literature that resilience is not a fixed attribute or outcome, but rather is a multi-dimensional and continually changing process (Everall et al, 2006;Richardson, Neiger, Jensen, & Kumpfer, 1990;Rutter, 1987Rutter, , 2001Ungar, 2005). Resiliency has been connected to the area of suicide prevention in numerous recent studies (Everall et al, 2006;Johnson et al, 2011;Nrugham, Holen, & Sund, 2010). In a narrow sense, resilience has come to mean the individual capacities, behaviours, and protective processes associated with health outcomes despite exposure to a significant number of risks.…”
