Associations between anthropometric indices, blood pressure and physical fitness performance in young Swiss men: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: ObjectivesTo assess the benefit of waist circumference (WC) measurements during routine conscription medical examination in two military conscription centres in Switzerland. We compared the prevalence of overweight and obesity assessed by body mass index (BMI) with the prevalence of elevated disease risks assessed by WC and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). We investigated how these measures were associated with systolic blood pressure, physical fitness performance and socioeconomic determinants.DesignCross-sectio… Show more

“…Furthermore, BMI is not an ideal indicator for body composition because it cannot differ between body weight caused by muscle and body weight caused by fat mass. However, recent research on waist circumference of the Swiss conscripts shows that this misclassification issue of BMI is probably limited to the lower overweight range (25.0‐27.5 kg/m 2 ) . Unfortunately, as an index for PA, no objective data were available.…”

Data of self-report questionnaires as the IPAQ short do show only moderate correlations to objective data.…”

“…small number or subjects. However, since the subjects of the present study regarding BMI and WC are closely comparable to the total population of all conscripts in Switzerland (which covers >90% of a given male birth cohort) [71,72], we believe that our results are generalizable, at least for young men in Switzerland. A larger and more diverse group of subjects will be needed to produce results which are generalizable for a broader population.…”

“…For standard WC measurements, a hand-held tape of stretch-resistant quality and automatic retraction was used (seca 201, Seca AG, Reinach, Switzerland). All WC measurements were performed by one of the authors trained in WC measurements (NB) (Koepke et al 2016;Staub et al 2018). The tape measurement position was chosen according to WHO guidelines, at midlevel PeerJ reviewing PDF | (2019:06:38312:1:1:NEW 22 Oct 2019)…”
