Associations Between Age at Menarche and Menopause With Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, and Osteoporosis in Chinese Women

Abstract: In China, ages at menarche and menopause are not associated with diabetes. Later menarche and menopause are associated with decreasing CVD risk and earlier menopause with higher osteoporosis risk. Menarche and menopause history may help identify women with increased risk of developing CVD and osteoporosis.

“…Menarche and menopause out of the common range have been associated with risk for various diseases, including breast cancer (Velie et al 2005;Vogel 2008), endometrial and ovarian cancer (Hinds and Price 2010;Cramer 2012), cardiovascular disease (Cui et al 2006), and osteoporosis (Qiu et al 2013;Parker et al 2014). It has been well recognized that genetic makeup influences both AM (Sharma 2002;Anderson et al 2008) and ANM (de Bruin et al 2001;Murabito et al 2005;Morris et al 2011).…”

“…Consequently, hormone therapy use may confound the relationship between age at menopause and CVD risk. Indeed, HRT was only adjusted for in a minority of identified studies [27][28][29][30][31] . Moreover, since the number of available studies in some of our analysis was small, it precluded our ability to comprehensively assess the impact of type of menopause in our results.…”

“…The age at menopause onset is a risk factor for long-term morbidity and mortality, late menopause being a risk factor for endometrial and breast cancer, and early menopause being a risk factor for osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases; a risk that occurs because of estrogen deficiency [10]. In Chinese women with postmenopausal osteoporosis, the onset of menopause before 46 years old is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis [11]. Although the estrogen hormonal decline is the main driver of bone metabolism imbalance in osteoporosis, it explains only a small proportion of the interindividual variations of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone loss [12].…”
