Smoking is closely related to the occurrence of stroke. The degree of nicotine dependence and willingness to quit smoking are key factors that determine whether a smoker can successfully quit smoking. Few studies have been conducted on factors affecting the willingness to quit smoking among smokers who suffered from stroke. Although the smoking rate has declined, it is still the main changeable risk factor for cerebrovascular diseases. We aimed to investigate the current status of nicotine dependence and willingness to quit smoking among patients who suffered from stroke. We also clarified factors that affect the willingness to quit smoking among stroke patients and provide evidence for quitting smoking. Convenience sampling methods were used to conduct cross-sectional studies. A questionnaire survey was administered to 215 stroke patients who smoked. A general information questionnaire as well as patient smoking and cessation status questionnaire were used. Nicotine dependence test scale, smoking attitude factor score, and tobacco harm perception scale were applied for investigation. Logistic regression was used to analyze factors related to patients’ willingness to quit smoking. Statistically significant differences in willingness to quit smoking were found among stroke patients with different ages, household registration status, education levels, marital status, occupation, smoking attitude, and nicotine dependence ( P < .05). About 34.4%, 39.1%, and 26.5% of smoking patients had low, moderate, and severe nicotine dependence, respectively. Logistic analysis showed that compared with other occupations, workers, retirees, farmers, and freelancers compared with other people (0.050, 0.081, 0.053, 0.048) had a negative impact on the willingness to quit smoking among stroke patients. Compared with positive attitudes, negative and neutral smoking attitudes (0.190, 0.048) had a negative impact on the willingness to quit smoking among stroke patients. Compared with high nicotine dependence, low and moderate nicotine dependence (4.628, 2.596) had a positive impact on willingness to quit smoking. Smoking patients in neurology department are more willing to quit smoking (67.9%). Factors such as occupation, smoking attitude, and nicotine dependence should be considered when establishing smoking cessation interventions for stroke smokers.

BackgroundSevere pneumonia in children accounts for a significant healthcare burden, involving prolonged hospitalization and increased risk of complications. The prognosis is closely related to the child's nutrition status. Anthropometric z scores are preferred to evaluate growth levels in children. This study aimed to investigate the association of anthropometric z scores with complications and length of hospital stay (LOS) in children with severe pneumonia.MethodsThis study included 361 hospitalized children aged 3 months to 5 years with severe pneumonia in Tianjin, China. Anthropometry was performed, and anthropometric z scores were calculated. Blood laboratory indices were assessed, and complications and LOS were recorded.ResultsThe average anthropometric z scores were −0.10 ± 1.15 (body mass index for age z score), 0.00 ± 0.97 (upper arm circumference for age z score [ACAZ]), and −0.14 ± 1.00 (triceps skinfold thickness for age z score [TSAZ]). The prevalence of complications was 73.96% (n = 267), including 82 children with only respiratory complications, 71 with only extrapulmonary complications, and 114 with both. After adjusting for confounding factors, compared with the noncomplication group, only the extrapulmonary complication group had a lower TSAZ (odds ratio [OR] = 0.597; 95% CI = 0.405–0.880; P < 0.05), whereas the respiratory and extrapulmonary complication group had a lower ACAZ (OR = 0.674; 95% CI = 0.469–0.969; P < 0.05) and TSAZ (OR = 0.573; 95% CI = 0.389–0.843; P < 0.05). ACAZ (β = −0.368; 95% CI = −0.720 to 0.016; P < 0.05) and TSAZ (β = −1.123; 95% CI = −1.470 to −0.777; P < 0.05) were negatively correlated with LOS.ConclusionACAZ and TSAZ were associated with complications and LOS of severe pneumonia in children aged 3 months to 5 years.

Background: Several anthropometric measurements are used to assess cardiovascular risk and progress during clinical treatment. Most commonly used anthropometric measurements include total body weight and body mass index (BMI), with several other simple anthropometric measures typically underused in clinical practice. Herein, we review the evidence on the relationship between different anthropometric measurements and cardiovascular risk in patients with and without cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: Data for this review were identified by searches in PubMed, the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and references from relevant articles by using appropriate and related terms. The last search was performed on June 22, 2022. Articles published in English and Spanish were reviewed and included, if appropriate. We included studies detailing the relationship between skinfolds thickness, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and Conicity index with cardiovascular risk in adults with/without CVD. Results: In patients from the general population, elevated subscapular and triceps skinfolds showed a positive relationship with the development of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality. A higher subscapular skinfold was also associated with increased risk of coronary artery disease and stroke. A higher WHR, as well as other less common anthropometric measurements such as the Conicity index, was associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction, incident CVD, major adverse cardiovascular events, and mortality in both patients with and without previous CVD. Conclusions: Non-traditional anthropometric measurements including skinfolds and WHR seem to improve the prediction of cardiovascular risk in the general population, and recurrent events in patients with previous CVD. Use of additional anthropometric techniques according to an objective and standardized method, may aid cardiovascular risk stratification in patients from the general population and the evaluation of therapeutic interventions for patients with CVD.
