Associations among Visual Acuity and Vision- and Health-Related Quality of Life among Patients in the Multicenter Uveitis Steroid Treatment Trial

Abstract: The vision-related function score correlated positively with visual acuity and moderately positively with general QoL measures. Cost-utility analyses relying on changes in generic healthy utility measures will be more likely to detect changes when there are clinically meaningful changes in vision-related function, rather than when there are only changes in visual acuity. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00132691.).

“…These findings seem contrary to cost-utility studies that have found that visual acuity changes are correlated with perceived improvement in the QOL. 17,18 Possible explanations could be that the follow-up study population was only at 50%, and as a result, limited conclusions can be made.…”

“…17,18 This was a tertiary care analysis of elderly patients with many comorbid conditions, including age-related macular degeneration, advanced glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Other possible explanations for this include partial reliance on contralateral eye vision for completing tasks.…”

“…39 These outcome measures capture broader considerations and hence may overcome some of the issues associated with the alternative outcome measures. The EQ-5D also allows treatments to be compared with treatments for other diseases and patient populations, although it may not be as sensitive as the VFQ-25.…”

“…The VFQ-25 subscores models were adjusted for age, gender, VA in the better seeing-eye, location of uveitis, laterality, duration, activity, and presence of ocular co-morbidities, which were variables found to be significantly associated with the CS score in the linear regression model (Table 2) or important variables identified in previous quality of life studies in patients with uveitis. [24][25][26] Similarly, the SF-12 component scores models were adjusted for age, gender, VA in the better-seeing eye, duration of uveitis, and presence of medical co-morbidities. 5 The median VFQ-25 CS score was 78.6 for both the systemic and nonsystemic treatment groups.…”
