“…Accordingly, the prevalence of ACEs has been shown to be substantially higher in justice-involved populations than general populations (Skarupski et al 2016) and poorer mental health and greater suicidality (Godet-Mardirossian et al 2011) has been found among prisoners with ACEs. For example, studies with incarcerated males have found increased levels of depression, psychological distress, and personality disorders among those with specific ACE types, such as childhood physical and sexual abuse (Roberts et al 2008;Sergentanis et al 2014;Skarupski et al 2016;Wolff and Caravaca Sánchez 2019;Wolff and Shi 2012;Zhang and Zheng 2018). However, to our knowledge no previous studies have explored associations between exposure to cumulative ACEs and prisoner MWB, while most studies exploring relationships between cumulative ACEs and prisoner mental illness have focused on women.…”

“…Researchers have suggested that some adverse childhood experiences may have a stronger impact on psychological distress and mental health than others, particularly abuse and neglect as compared to household dysfunction (Petruccelli et al, 2019;Wolff & Caravaca Sánchez, 2019). The ACE score includes five items that assess abuse or neglect (physical, sexual, and emotional), and five items that measure household dysfunction (Kessler et al, 2002(Kessler et al, , 2003.…”
