Associations among osteocalcin, leptin and metabolic health in children ages 9–13 years in the United States

Abstract: BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the relationships among osteocalcin, leptin and metabolic health outcomes in children ages 9–13 years.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 161 boys and 157 girls (ages 9–13 years) who previously participated in a double-blinded randomized placebo controlled trial of vitamin D supplementation. Relationships among fasting serum total osteocalcin (tOC), undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC), leptin, and metabolic health outcomes were analyzed.Re… Show more

“…Although, it is relevant to note that hyperleptinemia is consider an important condition that contribute to the pro-inflammatory state observed in obesity population, including adolescents, and associated with comorbidities development (35). Considering bone health, studies demonstrated a negatively association between leptin and bone turnover biomarkers, especially with osteocalcin (7,10,36,37).…”

“…Osteocytes are cells which derive from a subpopulation of osteoblasts that are encased within the mineralized bone matrix and orchestrate bone remodelling thus serving as a critical determinant of bone mass. 70 Therefore, osteocyte viability is crucial to bone health, since the loss of osteocytes directly impairs the capacity for bone to respond to changes in mechanical loading. 12,69 The bone-derived protein, osteocalcin, produced by osteoblasts, is typically reduced chronically after SCI and thought to play an integral role in the link between bone and metabolic health.…”

“…In humans, production of the adipocyte-derived peptide leptin has been linked to adiposity, insulin, and insulin sensitivity. There are studies that support the notion of its active role in the cardiometabolic health of adolescents [ 59 , 60 ]. Leptin will be assessed in each adolescent at baseline, and after the 4-month period of the study.…”
