Associations among Omega-3 Fatty Acid Status, Anxiety, and Mental Toughness in Female Collegiate Athletes

Abstract: Both blood and dietary omega-3 fatty acid levels are associated with general but not sport-specific anxiety in female collegiate athletes during an off-season period. Randomized trials should be conducted to evaluate the effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on anxiety and mental toughness in athletes.

“…Tension/anxiety was also higher in team-sport athletes with an l/l genotype compared with an s/s genotype for the 5-HTTLPR serotonin transporter 70. Symptoms of generalised anxiety were negatively correlated with several markers of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, including blood levels of eicosapentaenoic acid, docosapentaenoic acid and HS-omega-3 indices, in athletes across a range of sports (basketball, soccer, rifle, and golf) 71…”

“…Finally, additional research is needed on neurological or biological aspects of anxiety in elite athletes. There was a relative lack of attention to this among included studies, and such research could consider EEG profiles,69 or imaging approaches, the effects of biotherapeutic agents such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids71 or cannabidiol, which is currently not a prohibited substance for athletes,104 and genomics and related hereditary analytic approaches 104…”

“…To date, a small number of studies have investigated the use of finger sticks to measure PUFA composition in a drop of WB (Marangoni et al, 2004, 2007; Bailey-Hall et al, 2008). Despite some concerns raised about the reliability of this sample type, several methods assessing blood FA status from a finger stick sample of WB have been developed and validated in different clinical settings (Bell et al, 2011; Montgomery et al, 2013; Liu et al, 2014; Pupillo et al, 2016; Wilson and Madrigal, 2017). Furthermore, the data obtained from FA of WB are very closely correlated with those obtained by the standard method from RBC membrane.…”
