Associations among histological characteristics and patient outcomes in colorectal carcinoma with a mucinous component

Abstract: Stage-matched mCRCs and adenocarcinomas have similar outcomes, with no prognostic significance to morphological subtyping. Histological characteristics of mCRC, including percentage of tumour volume comprised of mucin, were not predictive of outcome.

“…In our study, the clinicopathological characteristics of HCM patients were consistent with those of stage‐matched conventional HC patients, except for higher CA19‐9 levels, larger tumor size, less differentiation, and high frequency of liver parenchyma invasion, portal vein invasion, and lymphovascular invasion. Similar to our findings, Gonzalez et al reported that CAM was correlated with larger tumor size and more positive lymph nodes. We believe that this higher tendency might be attributed to the highly aggressive biological behaviors of the mucinous component.…”

“…To date, only limited information is available regarding the association between the mucinous component and clinicopathological characteristics of solid tumors . “…Despite several studies comparing underlying clinicopathological differences between MAC and conventional CRC. Still, controversial results relating prognostic value of mucinous histology have been reported [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Till present, the prognostic value of MAC remains undetermined when the locations of the tumor, molecular alterations, population characteristics or different treatment plans are taken into account.…”
