Background: Parabens were considered to have potential negative impacts on reproductive health. This study aimed to examine the association between parabens and the onset of natural menopause. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 2,668 participants from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2016. The outcome of this study was the onset of menopause. The exposure of this study was four parabens, including butyl paraben (BP), ethyl paraben (EP), methyl paraben (MP), and propyl paraben (PP). Each paraben was categorized based on its tertile. Weighted COX regression models were employed to investigate the associations between BP, EP, MP, PP, and onset of natural menopause, respectively. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on smoke status, drink status, and oral contraceptives. Results: Natural menopause occurred in 1043 women in the total population. Compared with women with the lowest tertile of EP, women in the second tertile of EP [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.26, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.57] and the highest tertile of EP (HR = 1.28, 95% CI: 1.01-1.64) was associated with an increased risk of earlier onset of naturalmenopause. However, all BP, MP, and PP levels were not statistically associated with the onset of naturalmenopause. The results of subgroup analysis indicated that EP, MP, and PP were all associated with the earlier onset of natural menopause in women who did not used oral contraceptives. Conclusion:Our findings suggested an association between higher EP levels and an earlier onset of natural menopause in general U.S. women. The findings of our study necessitate further prospective epidemiologic research to validate.

IntroductionTo investigate the occurrence of previous cancer diagnoses in women suffering from premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and compare it with the general population, shedding light on the association between cancer, cancer treatments, and POI.Material and methodsWe conducted a nationwide case–control study based on registry data from various sources, including the Social Insurance Institution, Finnish Population Information System, and Finnish Cancer Registry spanning from 1953 to 2018. Our subjects comprised all women in Finland who, between 1988 and 2017, received hormone replacement therapy reimbursement for ovarian insufficiency before the age of 40 years (n = 5221). Controls, matched in terms of age and municipality of residence, were selected from the Finnish Population Information System (n = 20 822). Our main exposure variable was a history of cancer diagnosis preceding the diagnosis of POI. We analyzed odds ratios (OR) to compare the prevalence of previous cancers in women with POI with that in controls, stratifying results based on cancer type, age at cancer diagnosis, and the time interval between cancer diagnosis and POI. We also assessed changes in OR for previous cancer diagnoses over the follow‐up period.ResultsOut of the women diagnosed with POI, 21.9% had previously been diagnosed with cancer, resulting in an elevated OR of 36.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] 30.9 to 43.3) compared with 0.8% of the controls. The risk of developing POI was most pronounced during the first 2 years following a cancer diagnosis, with an OR of 103 (95% CI 74.1 to 144). Importantly, this risk remained elevated even when the time interval between cancer and POI exceeded 10 years, with an OR of 5.40 (95% CI 3.54 to 8.23).ConclusionsThis study reveals that 21.9% of women with POI have a history of cancer, making the prevalence of cancer among these women 27.5 times higher than age‐matched controls in the Finnish population. The risk of developing POI is most substantial in the first 2 years following a cancer diagnosis. These findings underscore the role of cancer treatments as an etiological factor for POI and emphasize the importance of recognizing the risk of POI in cancer survivors for early diagnosis and intervention.

This work aims at studying the spatio-temporal evolution of the age at menopause in central Portugal since the early twentieth century. We analyzed $$N=320,444$$ N = 320 , 444 women that had already reached the menopause within a free breast cancer screening program between 1990 and 2018 and born in the period 1910–1960. One of the concerns was about early or late menopause thus we considered percentile regression to build the respective percentile curves inside the package GAMLSS in R. In order to capture the correlation at the regional level, a spatial random-effect was considered. The obtained clustered spatial effects were analyzed to assess geographical differences among the percentiles of the age at menopause by year of birth. An increasing trend in the median age at menopause and regional differences for all the considered percentiles were found. From 47.1 years in 1910 to 49.59 years in 1960 (about 2.49 years in 5 decades). Early and premature menopause (below percentile 5%) occur in the interior north (north-eastern). Late menopause (above percentile 95%) occur predominantly in the central-north and central-south areas.
