Association of Vitamin D Deficiency with Diabetic Nephropathy

Abstract: Background: Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels are associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, the association between 25OHD and metabolic health status or diabetic complications is inconclusive. We evaluated this relationship between vitamin D status and metabolic parameters and complications of T2DM. Methods: This study included 1,392 patients with T2DM who visited Eulji and Ewha Diabetes Center between January 2011 and August 2016. Anthropometric parameters and laboratory … Show more

“…who reported that VDD correlated with eGFR and worsening renal function from stage 3–5 ( 38 ). In addition, other researchers reported that VDD can be associated with diabetic nephropathy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes ( 39 , 40 ). Moreover, diabetic patients on hemodialysis have significantly lower levels of vitamin D than patients without diabetes ( 41 ).…”

“…Some studies with large samples evaluated the association between VD levels and DKD (48)(49)(50). Hong et al (48), studying retrospectively 1392 patients with T2DM found an association between VD levels, albuminuria, and DKD.…”

“…Some studies with large samples evaluated the association between VD levels and DKD (48)(49)(50). Hong et al (48), studying retrospectively 1392 patients with T2DM found an association between VD levels, albuminuria, and DKD. In parallel, Wang et al (50), in an observational study evaluating 4033 patients, described those patients with low VD levels showed a stronger association between lead levels and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio.…”

“…Vitamin D repletion for the treatment of neuropathic pain has been studied in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), a condition with high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency [72,73]. Although there is no clear mechanism of action for the treatment of pain with vitamin D, one proposed explanation is that vitamin D is involved in the regulation of inflammatory cytokines [74].…”
