Association of Spinal Manipulative Therapy With Clinical Benefit and Harm for Acute Low Back Pain

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Acute low back pain is common and spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is a treatment option. “…One explanation for these statistics is that, in the majority of LBP cases, the specific nociceptive source of LBP cannot be identified [1,3]. As such, the treatment of nonspecific LBP when the cause is unknown can lead to a wide variety of outcomes if interventions cannot be matched to the underlying etiology [4,5].…”

“…6,7 Chiropractic care is popular among patients, 8,9 with efficacy for treating back and neck pain comparable to usual care in experimental randomized controlled trial (RCT) settings. [10][11][12] However, the effectiveness of chiropractic care as actually delivered in routine conventional and integrative medicine practice remains largely unexplored. Rigorous evaluation of such routine care is complicated by numerous methodological challenges.…”
