Association of skin tag with metabolic syndrome and its components: A case–control study from Eastern India

Abstract: Background: Skin tags are benign polyps, usually found in the natural folds of the skin. Some studies have found an association of skin tags with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and atherogenic lipid profile. Metabolic syndrome refers to co-occurrence of these cardiovascular risk factors such as insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. Aims and Objectives: To find out any possible association of skin tags with metabolic syndrome and its components. … Show more

“…Several previous studies from India have investigated association between these cutaneous signs of IR in isolation with different facets of MetS like anthropometric measures of obesity (i.e., BMI [32], waist circumference [37,38], W:H ratio), HOMA-IR [29,30,31,33], lipid parameters, diabetes and other diseases clustering with MetS [34,35,36]. They all nd an association between these cutaneous signs and the facets of MetS they investigated.…”

“…La etiología de los PFE no ha sido completamente estudiada, pero se ha encontrado una asociación con la presencia de anormalidades metabólicas, como obesidad, diabetes mellitus II, resistencia a la insulina, dislipidemias, hiper- tensión y lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDL) bajas (6) . Sin embargo, ninguna de nuestras pacientes presentó alteraciones metabólicas.…”

“…IGF-1 stimulates fibroblast proliferation, which further cascades a hyperplasia of keratinocytes with the occurrence of hyperkeratosis and papillomatosis [ 13 , 14 ]. FPs are also strongly associated with a certain risk of development of metabolic syndrome characterized by the co-occurrence of dyslipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and insulin resistance, specifically in the case of patients with low HDL and high waist circumference [ 15 , 16 ].…”
