Association of serum fibroblast growth factor 19 levels with arteriosclerosis parameters assessed by arterial stiffness and  atherogenic index of plasma in patients  with type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Background The role of serum fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) in the arteriosclerosis is not well known. In the present study, we aimed to explore whether serum FGF19 levels were related to the arteriosclerosis parameters, including arterial stiffness and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methods 200 patients with type 2 diabetes and 50 healthy controls were recruited for this study from Apr 2017 to Oct 2018. Serum FGF19 levels, arterial stiffness assessed by brachia… Show more

“…In contrast, in HFD‐fed ApoE −/− mice, phosphorylation of hepatic farnesoid X receptor by FGF15/19 signaling maintained serum cholesterol levels and protected against atherosclerosis (Byun et al, 2019). In patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), serum FGF15/19 levels are independently and inversely associated with arteriosclerosis parameters, supporting a protective role for serum FGF15/19 in atherosclerosis progression (W. S. Liu, Tang, et al, 2020). FGF21 also mitigates atherosclerosis in HFD‐fed ApoE −/− mice (Maeng et al, 2020).…”

“…Patients between 20 and 73 years old with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes [19] and who underwent baPWV, ABI and carotid B-ultrasonography were enrolled to participate. A well-trained examiner collected the information of the patients via their clinal records, including sex, age, sex, duration, waist circumference, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI: weight (kg)/height (m) squared), history of cardiovascular events, dyslipidemia [20], hypertension [17], medical history (statin use), antidiabetic treatment (lifestyle alone, insulin treatment, insulin secretagogues, insulin sensitizers, metformin, glucosidase inhibitors, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4Is), and sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGL-2Is)). These patients were excluded if they had a history of CAD, abnormal liver function, severe renal disease, previous tumor, or acute diabetic complications (diabetic ketoacidosis).…”
