Association of rural life setting and poorer quality of life in Parkinson's disease patients: a cross‐sectional study in Croatia

Abstract: Assessment of quality of life (QoL) has become an important measure in Parkinson's disease (PD) healthcare as a part of the efforts to evaluate the 'total burden' of the illness, and not only the motor disabilities. By analogy with some other diseases, we aimed to investigate potential urban-rural disparities in QoL in PD patients. A total of 111 consecutive PD patients were assessed for QoL using a specific 39-item version of PD quality of life questionnaire (PDQ-39) in a cross-sectional study involving two c… Show more

“…The relationship between people who live in rural and urban communities ranges according to the analyzed disease. For Parkinson's disease, for instance, quality of life is better in urban areas 27 ; at the same time, for rheumatoid arthritis, this relationship is inverse 28 . Our results show that living in the rural zone presented higher chances of realizing the impacts of oral health on quality of life.…”

“…Representing the impact of a disease on a person's self-perceived well-being, HrQoL is an important aspect in the healthcare of chronic diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders. The majority of studies evaluating HrQoL in parkinsonian disorders concentrated on idiopathic PD [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] and only a few investigated APS [15,16,18,22] .…”

“…The majority of studies used disease-specific instruments to investigate HrQoL in PD [3,14,27,31]. We used a generic instrument, EuroQol, because our aim was to assess overall HrQoL and compare it with the general population.…”

“…HrQoL is defined as an individual's perception of his or her well-being that is related to health status and can be affected by disease and its treatment [5]. The demographic and clinical determinants of HrQoL, such as age, disease severity, motor and non-motor symptoms, have been thoroughly investigated in previous studies [4,7,9,20,22,23,25,32], whereas less is known about the role of social factors in HrQoL of patients with PD [3,14,32].…”
