Association of Rotavirus With Seizures Accompanied by Cerebral White Matter Injury in Neonates

Abstract: We aimed to identify whether rotavirus, human parechovirus, or enterovirus are causative or associated viral pathogens of seizures accompanied by diffuse cerebral white matter injury in neonates. Thirty neonates who presented with seizures and diffusion-restriction in the widespread bilateral cerebral white matter on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included in this study. All patients were tested for rotavirus, human parechovirus, and enterovirus by using reverse transcription PCR. Sto… Show more

“…PCR for those two viruses can be performed on the CSF, blood, throat, or urine (specifically for CMV). Respiratory viruses such as adenovirus 39 or influenza, and enteric virus infections, mainly rotavirus, 40 have also been associated with sepsis-like syndrome in neonates. The presence of concurrent upper respiratory tract infection/myalgia/ gastroenteritis among the family contacts can point to a viral cause.…”

“…In this regard, recent reports of neonatal seizures associated with rotavirus infection in term neonates suggest several new and surprising perspectives111213). First, infection/inflammation might induce WMI in term-neonates as well as preterm neonates.…”

“…Rotavirus antigen examination was not performed in CSF. But according to Oh et al., mostly rotavirus antigen was not detected in CSF and serum samples 5) . Therefore, we suggest that infants with clinically birth.…”
