Association of reproductive history with hypertension and prehypertension in Chinese postmenopausal women: a population-based cross-sectional study

Abstract: Hypertension and prehypertension may have important roles in the etiology of cardiovascular disease. However, the risk factors of hypertension and prehypertension have not been thoroughly elucidated to date. This study intended to explore the relative effects between reproductive history and the prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension. A population-based cross-sectional survey of postmenopausal women (n=6252), aged 41-93 years, was conducted from August 2013 to August 2015. All subjects, selected by the… Show more

“…A previous literature review on reproductive risk factors and CVD in postmenopausal females concluded that AAM had no statistically significant association with hypertension [25]. In addition, a recent study among 6,252 Chinese females from Henan Province in central China showed that females with older AAM had a higher risk of hypertension, but the association was not statistically significant [26]. Our study contributed a further evidence that late AAM increased SBP and DBP and the risk of hypertension in Chinese female population.…”

“…However, it is also controversial given that the risk of CVD is the main basis of determining the strategy for antihypertensive treatment. Several epidemiological studies have investigated the occurrence of adverse events attributable to stage 1 hypertension ( 18 ). Nonetheless, some of the studies limited the age of their study population to above 41 years, a cutoff that was not really representative of the entire population.…”

“…Postmenopause is the time after menopause and lasts for more than one third of women"s life. “…Various studies have reported the beneficial role of soybean consumption in the management of dyslipidemia (Yang et al, 2017), atherosclerosis (Cano et al, 2010) and hypertension (Kou et al, 2017) by using either the soy extracted isoflavones or isolated soy protein.…”
