Association of Optimism and Pessimism With Inflammation and Hemostasis in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Abstract: Objective-Optimism and pessimism are associated with cardiovascular disease mortality and progression, however the biological mechanism remains unclear. This study investigates the association between optimism/pessimism and concentrations of seven inflammation and hemostasis markers.Methods-This cross-sectional study used data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), a study of 6814 persons aged 45-84 with no history of clinical cardiovascular disease. The Life-Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) wa… Show more

“…showed that older women with depression and distress had higher levels of interleukin‐6 as compared with those without. To the contrary, high LOT‐R score, which means more optimistic, was associated with lower levels of interleukin‐6 and C‐reactive protein35. It is also reported that the score of the social network index is inversely associated with elevated interleukin‐6 and intercellular adhesion molecule‐1 levels, after adjusting for confounders including age, smoking, blood pressure, body mass index, medication for dyslipidemia and hypertension, cardiovascular disease, depression, and socioeconomic status36.…”

“…20 Other biologic and environmental risk factors have been proposed to explain faster rates of progression from CKD to ESRD in blacks, including differences in social and demographic factors as well as biologic factors. Prior reports suggest that sociodemographic differences may have important influences on chronic disease through mediators such as chronic stress, psychosocial factors (i.e., pessimism and low self-esteem), 21 acculturation, 22 environmental pollution, 23 or differences in access to care. 24,25 Whether or not these factors and their interaction with genetic predisposition may also explain race/ethnic differences in early kidney function decline will be an important area for future study.…”

“…However, these findings did not hold when the optimism subscale rather than the full scale of the Life Orientation Test-Revised was used. Moreover, the hemostasis markers of D-dimer, factor VIII, and plasminantiplasmin were not associated with optimism among MESA participants (Roy et al, 2010). Finally, in a small cross-sectional study of postmenopausal women, optimism was positively associated with longer telomere length, an indicator of cellular aging (O'Donovan et al, 2009).…”

“…Effects for pessimism were stronger than effects for optimism, and optimism was not associated with rate of change in these markers over time. In cross-sectional analyses within the MultiEthnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)-a diverse cohort of nearly 7,000 men and women-greater dispositional optimism was not associated with CRP in analyses adjusted for age, gender, and race (Roy et al, 2010). However, the most optimistic MESA participants had lower levels of IL-6 after adjusting for age, race, and gender (Roy et al, 2010).…”
