Association of Oncogenic and Nononcogenic Human Papillomavirus With HIV Incidence

Abstract: Several explanations could account for our findings. One is that HR-HPV facilitates HIV acquisition. The association of HPV with HIV acquisition requires further investigations.

“…9 Although it is universally accepted that HPV infection does not elicit a local inflammatory reaction, it has been hypothesized that HPV infection could facilitate HIV transmission through disruption of mucosal integrity and/or altered local immunosurveillance. 9,10 The interplay between HPV and HIV at genital mucosa level has been evaluated in a very limited number of studies, which used different methodologies and reached inconsistent results. 4,11 The present study aims at estimating whether the presence of cervical HPV infection and HPV viral load at cervical level may alter HIV genital shedding in HIVseropositive women.…”

“…A, Correlation between cervical HPV-DNA log10 and genital HIV-RNA log 10 in the group of women with cervical HPV infection (n = 70; r = 20.08). B, Quantitative correlation between cervicovaginal HIV and cervical HPV in women with HIV genital shedding (n = 27; r = 0.19).…”

“…The relationship between HPV and HIV coinfection is especially important, as anal and urethral HPV infection in men significantly increases the risk for HIV acquisition and the development of anal dysplasia and cancer. 3,38 Given the high prevalence of high-risk HPV type infection, especially in HIV-coinfected MSM and in those who practice receptive or versatile anal intercourse, efforts toward decreasing the risk of HPV acquisition and increasing surveillance for HPV-related cancer in MSM are warranted.…”

“…Auvert and colleagues used data from male circumcision trial in South Africa to look at association between HPV and HIV incidence [16]. After controlling for other factors, there was no association between low risk HPV and HIV but there was 4 fold increased risk in men with high risk HPV and the incidence increased with number of high-risk HPV genotypes detected, a similar finding was reported among MSM in the USA where increasing numbers of anal HPV types increased HIV risk [17].…”
