“…Recent study also revealed that pH in the effluent of aerobic stage decreased from 6.92 to 6.57 due to the aerobic nitrification, but the pH in the final effluent was over 7 when the wastewater flowed through an anaerobic stage (Kong et al, 2015). The effluent pH in this study was obviously lower than that in other infiltration systems (Ji et al, 2012), even though the pH values are unavailable in most studies.…”

“…The absolute abundance of the (nirK + nirS) genes slightly decreased from 5.0 Â 10 3 copies/g on day 28 to 2.1 Â 10 3 copies/g on day 161 (start-up phase and Phase II, respectively) and ranged from 4.0 Â 10 3 to 6.8 Â 10 3 copies/g during Phases III-V. The results indicated that these genes not only played an important role in nitrite reduction but were also primary contributors to NO greenhouse gas production in the biofilter (Ji et al, 2012b). The absolute abundance of the qnorB gene exhibited a continuous increase from 9.5 Â 10 2 copies/g on day 28 to 3.3 Â 10 3 copies/g on day 217 (start-up phase and Phase IV, respectively), suggesting increased NO conversion in denitrification.…”

“…Thus, the carbon cycling that binds together earth's ecosystems and their inhabitants is the key process to understand the interactions between living organisms and their surroundings (Janzen 2004). In recent decades, carbon cycling is reported to have significant impacts on global warming, climate change, and many other biogeochemical processes in terrestrial and marine ecosystems (Falkowski et al 2000;Heimann and Reichstein 2008;Zhi and Ji 2014;Ji et al 2012;Feely et al 2004). Advanced understanding of carbon cycling is also required for projecting climate into the future and forecasting the global and regional impacts on ecosystems (Bellard et al 2012;Davidson and Janssens 2006).…”

“…It is also the fundamental building block of life and ecosystems, as well as a vital component of many chemical and biological processes (Hessen and Anderson 2008;Yuan et al 2014;Ji et al 2012;. Thus, the carbon cycling that binds together earth's ecosystems and their inhabitants is the key process to understand the interactions between living organisms and their surroundings (Janzen 2004).…”
