Association of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis with Multiple Sclerosis in Sardinian Patients

Abstract: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection is highly spread in the ruminant herds of Sardinia, in the Western Mediterranean. The objective of this study was to investigate prevalence of MAP infection in association with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) using clinical specimen from patients and controls. We analyzed samples for the presence of MAP specific DNA and to demonstrate humoral response to a MAP protein (MAP2694), a predicted homologue of the T-cell receptor gamma-chain/complement component 1 o… Show more

“…The same molecular mimicry principle is suggested as the link between MAP (HSP65) and the organ-specific autoantigens of thyroiditis [76,77]. Also, a recent article implicate MAP in multiple sclerosis [78]. Molecular mimicry and SLC11A1 associations are germane here as well [79].…”

“…Recently our group reported MAP involvement in MS [1,2]. The association was postulated in light of the strong humoral response directed against two MAP specific proteins (MAP2694, MAPFprB), and the detection of MAP's DNA in the peripheral blood of MS patients.…”

“…We recently demonstrated that Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is an environmental agent associated with MS in the Sardinian population [1,2]. The rate of MS in Sardinia is one of the highest worldwide [3], probably due to the particular genetic structure of Sardinian people.…”
