Association of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I Chain-Related Gene A and HLA-B Alleles with Behçet's Disease in Turkey

Abstract: Our results indicate that the major susceptibility gene for BD is HLA-B*51 and that the association between MICA*009 and BD arises from a strong linkage disequilibrium with HLA-B*51. However, we suggest that MICA*009 likely elicits an immune effect secondary to BD.

“…HLA-B51 may be the strongest indicator that certain genes are directly responsible for BD (11,15). Prominent association of HLA-B51 with BD in many different ethnic groups was reported (3,13,14).…”

“…Of many cytokines with inflammatory property, IL-12 in BD was shown by some investigators [18][19][20]. Even some data consider possible association of BD with specific polymorphism of the IL-12 gene and its promoter [21][22][23]. IL-12 shares a p40 subunit with a recently discovered cytokine named IL-23 [24], and this fact raises the need to examine whether IL-23 is involved in BD pathogenicity.…”

“…The exact pathophysiology of BD remains unknown. Human leukocyte antigen-B51 (HLA-B51) is associated with BD in 70% to 80% of patients, especially in regions where the disease is more prevalent [1]. A novel HLAB antigen was identified in a Saudi family affected with BD.…”
