Association of Rhizoctonia strains with bare patch disease of wheat in Western Australia

Abstract: Rhizoctonia-Wkt fungi were isolated from the roots of diseased wheat plants sampled from the centre and periphery of three bare patches, and from apparently healthy plants from outside the patches. Of the isolates recovered, 81 % were multinucleate and belonged to R. solani anastomosis group 8, and pectic zymogram group 1-1; the remaining isolates were binucleate Rhizoctonia spp. The multinucleate isolates could be grouped into highly virulent, intermediately virulent, and weakly virulent types. The binucleate… Show more

“…Neither of the binucleate Rhizoctonia (AG‐I and AG‐K) was pathogenic in this study. Similar results were obtained in other studies (Windels & Nabben, 1989; Xia & Li, 1990; Zhao & Li, 1993; Rush et al ., 1994; Yang et al ., 1994). However, binucleate R. cerealis (AG‐D) was found as the causal agent of sharp eyespot disease on barley and wheat (Lipps & Herr, 1982; Xia & Li, 1990; Zhao & Li, 1993).…”

“…The virulence assay was a modification of that of Yang (1993). A 5 mm plug bearing a test isolate was transferred to the middle of solid medium and incubated at 25°C.…”

“…Apparently healthy plants which were at growth stage five on Large's scale (Large, 1953) were taken from outside the patches. R. solani was isolated from surface-sterilized root segments as described by Yang et al (1994).…”
