“…Many longitudinal and cross sectional research studies have examined the relationship of low SES and BMI in children. Researchers found a stable and enduring positive relationship between low income and BMI persisting from early childhood into adolescence and adulthood (Demment et al 2014;Freitas et al 2012;Gigante et al 2012;Graversen et al 2015;Lane et al 2012;McMillan and Erdmann 2010;Ventura et al 2009).…”

“…The results of associations between SS in childhood and obesity in adults are mostly from studies in high-income countries 4 , 8 , 21 . Among the few studies conducted in Brazil 1 , 6 , 7 , 9 , 22 , the results are not consistent and differ between the gender and according to the diagnostic criterion of obesity. Particularly among women, the associations are more consistent, with the vast majority of results suggesting a higher frequency of obesity among those with lower SS in childhood.…”

“…Particularly among women, the associations are more consistent, with the vast majority of results suggesting a higher frequency of obesity among those with lower SS in childhood. Among men, however, the international literature does not seem to have a consensus in associations; and the few studies performed in two cohorts in Brazil (Pelotas and Ribeirão Preto), indicate that better SS at the beginning of the life cycle is associated with greater occurrence of obesity in adulthood 1 , 6 , 7 , 9 , 22 .…”
