Association of Ezrin expression with the progression and prognosis of gastrointestinal cancer: a meta-analysis

Abstract: BackgroundEzrin, a cytoskeletal protein, is involved in cell adhesion. Several studies have been performed to explore the association between Ezrin and gastrointestinal cancers, but the results are inconclusive. This meta-analysis aims to assess the prognostic value of Ezrin.Materials and Methods/FindingsPubMed and EMBASE were searched. Pooled hazard ratio (HR), odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were utilized to evaluate the association between Ezrin expression and various clinical parameters. … Show more

“…This was consistent with the results of a previous meta‐analysis in patients with osteosarcoma and might have been caused by the limited number of studies of nonosteosarcoma that were included. In a recent meta‐analysis , the results showed that ezrin expression was not correlated with the distant metastasis of either gastric or esophageal cancers. Ezrin was suggested to be involved in the metastasis of osteosarcoma , and the underlying molecular mechanism involved in the modulation of metastasis by ezrin might be different in different cancers.…”

“…High Ezrin expression levels were significantly associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis, as well as with independent predictors of lymph node metastasis . A meta‐analysis showed that Ezrin expression is significantly associated with tumor grade, TNM stage and lymph node metastasis in CRC . Intense cytoplasmic Ezrin immunoreactivity predicts poor survival in CRC .…”

“…Ezrin is a member of the Ezrin–radixin–moesin (ERM) protein family, which links the actin cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane. Several lines of evidence suggest relationships among Ezrin expression, nodal involvement and prognosis . Even though the authors detected Ezrin expression mainly in the cytoplasm in CRC specimens, Ezrin expression in PDC and MP components has not been analyzed.…”
