Association of Early-Life Factors With Life-Course Trajectories of Resting Heart Rate

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Higher resting heart rate (RHR) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Limited attention has been paid to early-life determinants of life-course RHR. OBJECTIVE To describe trajectories of RHR in the same individuals from age 6 to 69 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Data were from the Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development population-based cohort of individuals who were followed up from birth in 1946 until 2015. Analysis was co… Show more

“…It could also serve as a predictive biomarker for mental health risk as the body of research surrounding the topic grows. Recent studies have explored resting HR during adolescence as a predictive measure for later hypertension or have explored models of resting HR trajectory in association with other risk factors, but ours is the first to explore this potential biomarker in the context of development and mental health [ 39 , 42 ]. In addition, our sample’s demonstration of psychological consequences in addition to the physiological implications could provide new information about a psychobiological sequelae of violence exposure.…”

“…This explanation is recommended by a longitudinal study performed over six decades, which exhibited that modifiable factors during various stages of life (socioeconomic etc.) can adjust resting HR over the years, even with biological patterns outside the ideal range of development (such as birth weight and size) 40 . An important methodological apprehension regarding the aforesaid studies is the inclusion of either gender and an absence of maintaining levels of physical activity.…”

“…Against current preventive practices focused on children, adults and older persons must be also included, as caries is a lifetime chronic disease that continues to affect the person throughout life [ 75 ]. The idea of monitoring NCDs from an early age, for example in heart conditions [ 76 ], is a common objective applicable to all NCDs, including dental caries disease. Thus, the focus in promoting health and controlling, instead of curing, the disease should be widely acknowledged.…”
