Abstract: These results indicate that depressed mood following stroke is associated with an increased risk of subsequent mortality. Patients who are depressed and socially isolated seem to be particularly vulnerable.

“…PSD can significantly affect the functional recovery of the patient [44], the process of social and family reintegration and survival [45], and can increase the risk of future recurrence of adverse vascular events [14, 40]. As such, it is fundamental to know these complications and to detect them as early as possible so as to initiate antidepressant therapy.…”

“…The association between PSD and long-term mortality risk has been investigated, the increased risk being independent of other factors such as gender, age, social class, stroke type, site of lesion, comorbidity and functional recovery of the patient [45, 46, 57]. Also, there appears to be a special vulnerability of the depressed patient in social isolation.…”

“…Outcome after stroke is well documented in numerous studies [1,2,3,4,5,6,7], and several prognostic determinants such as age, diabetes, hypertension, physical inactivity, cardiac disease, recurrent stroke, stroke subtype, stroke unit care, depression and stroke severity have been identified. However, the starting point has most often been the time of the stroke.…”

“…Comorbid psychiatric disorders also affect the outcome of the medical disorder and the healthcare costs of medical patients [2]. As an example, it has been reported that depression following stroke and myocardial infarction is associated with an increased risk of subsequent mortality [3, 4]. Although authors engaged in psychiatric aspects of dermatologic disorders commonly report about the psychosomatic basis of skin diseases and the personality of the patients with skin diseases, the relationship between psychologic factors and skin diseases has not been well defined yet.…”
