Association of Demographics and Hospital Stay Characteristics With Patient Experience in Hospitalized Pediatric Patients

Abstract: There is limited research on patient experience in hospitalized pediatric patients. Our aim was to investigate the association of patient demographics and hospital stay characteristics with experience in a tertiary-care, freestanding children’s hospital. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of patient experience surveys. We designated the highest rating as “top-box” and examined data across 8 domains, including overall assessment (OA). A total of 4602 surveys were analyzed. Top-box percentages we… Show more

“…In previous studies (Chen et al, 2020;Lyratzopoulos et al, 2011;Ria et al, 2017;Takakuwa et al, 2010), age was correlated with all observational variables-older respondents were discovered to have significantly less knowledge about radiation and imaging modalities, experienced less fear or anxiety, and were more satisfied with treatment at the radiology department. In contrast, our study showed no association between age and radiation knowledge, emotional perception, or satisfaction.…”

“…Furthermore, age was found to have a statistically significant impact on both patients' emotional perception of the imaging and their treatment satisfaction. Significant association between the age and emergence of emotional distress during an examination has been reported (Chen et al, 2020;Lyratzopoulos et al, 2011). The younger patients were found to be more prone to have a negatively experience during such procedures, and consequently they evaluated their experience at the radiology department with lower satisfaction scores.…”

“…7,8 The few pediatric satisfaction studies have demonstrated mixed findings surrounding the effect of demographics, primary language, child health status, and socioeconomic factors on satisfaction scores, with results showing that older children, Spanish-speaking Latino parents, and families with lower income provided higher patient experience ratings. [9][10][11] We submit that in addition to the above factors, it is also important to identify physician personality characteristics that may affect the patient and family"s experience of care. In adult patient studies, the effects of physician sex and race on adult patient experience scores are mixed.…”
