Association of cytokine gene polymorphisms with bronchopulmonary dysplasia in Han Chinese newborns

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the association of 14 cytokine gene polymorphisms with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) among Han Chinese newborns. The 14 polymorphisms investigated were IL18 rs1946519, rs1946518, rs187238, rs360718, and rs360717 polymorphisms, IL10 rs3024493 polymorphism, IL6 rs1800795, rs1800796, and rs1800797 polymorphisms, TNF rs361525 and rs1800629 polymorphisms, and TGFB1 rs1800469, rs1800468, and rs1800471 polymorphisms.Working hypothesis: The polymorphisms could be associated with the risk o… Show more

“…The reported incidence of BPD ranges from 24–79% in preterm infants born <32 weeks of gestation (Chen & Zheng, ; Stoll et al, ). Although the mortality of preterm infants has decreased over the past decades, the morbidity of BPD has remained relatively unchanged (Niedermaier & Hilgendorff, ).…”

“…The complete process of study selection adhered to the PRISMA statement [72] and is depicted in Figure 1. The combined analysis of the 50 included datasets [9-45, 48-52, 62] was pooled together including 3 studies of AP [49][50][51], 2 for BA [44,45], 27 for CAD , 5 for RA [35][36][37], 6 for T2D [38][39][40][41][42][43], 4 for IS [31][32][33][34], and 3 for 'Other' diseases [48,52,62] (incorporating one study for each of the following: BPD, ALI, and inflammatory bowel diseases). The dataset comprised 29 East Asian populations and 21 South Asian populations in terms of ethnicity.…”

“…Also, type 2 diabetes (T2D) was significantly associated with the Asian population [40][41][42][43], whereas others claimed no association [44,45]. The IL6 gene rs1800795 polymorphism was significantly associated with bronchial asthma (BA) [46,47] and showed no significant association with acute lung injury (ALI) [48], acute pancreatitis (AP) [49][50][51], and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in Asians [52]. The ambiguity in results might be due to diversity in research design, variations in the sample size, and overall operational quality.…”
