Association of Class 1 and 2 Integrons with Multidrug-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii International Clones and Acinetobacter nosocomialis Isolates

Abstract: bThe Acinetobacter baumannii clonal complex 113/79 (CC113/79) and class 2 integrons predominate in Latin America; a relationship between these characteristics was explored. The presence of integrases was determined in successive hospital Acinetobacter isolates (163 A. baumannii isolates and 72 Acinetobacter nosocomialis isolates). Most isolates had integrons, but class 1 and 2 integrons were present significantly more often in CC109/1 and CC113/79, respectively. The high prevalence of CC113/79 in Latin America… Show more

“…In addition to the genes responsible for carbapenem resistance and high MIC values for tigecycline, most of the strains analyzed by MLST belonged to CC113, confirming its dissemination in Brazil and Latin America [ 12 , 63 , 13 14 , 64 , 15 16 ]. Additionally, a new ST, ST1399, belonging to CC229, is reported.…”

“…Also, Kamalbeik et al showed that 7.5% and 67.5% of the strains contained class I and II integrons, respectively [23]. In the studies carried out by Ramírez et al [24] and Martins et al [25], the prevalence of class II Integron was 23% and 41.7%, respectively. In the research conducted by Taherikalani et al (Tehran at 2012) [26] and Moammadi et al (west of Iran at 2012) [27] the frequency of class I, II, and III integrons was 85%, 14%, and 0%, and 97%, 31%, and 0%, respectively.…”

“…Interestingly, Martins et al 7 showed the same distribution of class 1 and 2 integrons, related to specific CCs such as CC15 and CC79. 7 In a previous study, we reported a high prevalence of class 2 integrons in southern Brazil. Indeed, these results might be explained by the association of class 2 integrons to CC79, which are prevalent in South America.…”
