Association of circulating omentin-1 level with lung cancer in smokers

Abstract: Background: Omentin has recently been considered as an adipokine secreted from visceral fat and is expressed in the lungs, heart, ovary etc. Various studies have shown that omentin may have an anti-inflammatory role in the inflammatory process and the amount of omentin alters in some cancers, such as colorectal, prostate and renal cells cancers, changes. The serum level of omentin, however, remains unknown in non-patient smokers and the smokers afflicted with lung cancer. Therefore, this study exami… Show more

“…Moreover, omentin concentration is inversely correlated with BMI and percent body fat [ 260 , 261 , 265 , 266 ]. An increase in serum omentin levels correlated with a decrease in serum CRP levels and suppression of TNF-α function, confirming the link between ITLN and inflammation [ 267 ]. In addition, Escote et al [ 261 ] noted that omentin-1 shows a gender dimorphism, as higher levels were observed in women than in men.…”

“…Overall, only 8 studies adequately described the characteristics of the assay ( Table 1 ), while 5 studies did not report any characteristics (e.g., sensitivity, range) and 7 were inconsistent (e.g., reported data were outside the assay range) or failed to give sufficient details (e.g., the manufacturer’s reported intra- and inter-assay coefficient of variation). Interestingly, only 5 studies passed the methodological quality control and provided high-quality data ( 32 , 35 , 36 , 40 , 41 ) as the assay characteristics were reported adequately and the blood was collected in the morning, after an overnight fast.…”

“…A total of 10 studies collected blood in the morning after an overnight fast, 3 studies reported that blood was collected in a fasted state (without mentioning the period of the day), 1 study suggested that blood was collected in the morning (but did not indicate whether participants fasted), 3 studies stated non-specific/ were outside the assay range) or failed to give sufficient details (e.g., the manufacturer's reported intra-and inter-assay coefficient of variation). Interestingly, only 5 studies passed the methodological quality control and provided high-quality data (32,35,36,40,41) as the assay characteristics were reported adequately and the blood was collected in the morning, after an overnight fast.…”
