Association of CCL13 Levels in Serum and Synovial Fluid with the Radiographic Severity of Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract: CCL13 levels in serum and SF were correlated with the radiographic severity of OA. CCL13 levels in serum and SF may serve as a biomarker for the progression of OA.

“…Additional CC chemokines are modulated in human joint injury and OA. Some of these studies show interesting correlations with radiographic severity 24,25 suggesting 736 SCANZELLO potential biomarker utility. Others have been implicated in disease pathogenesis in animal models 26 but the relevance to human disease is unclear.…”

“…They mostly involved inflammatory parameters which have shown a positive correlation with disease severity evaluated by X-ray of the targeted joint. [60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75] Interestingly, such associations could not be observed when the same markers were measured in the serum, suggesting that SF measurements may be more sensitive than systemic assessments likely due to the lower specificity for articular metabolism.…”

“…Afterwards, further 32 articles were excluded, either because they were reviews, studies not written in English, studies that described biomarkers not obtained from SF samples, or studies that included other diseases without reporting about OA. Thus, 159 articles 12,15…”
