Association of Carotid Intima-media Thickness and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Women Pre- and Post-bariatric Surgery

Abstract: The weight loss achieved with bariatric surgery resulted in regression of C-IMT. This regression could be observed 6 months following surgery, with an additional benefit at 12 months. Also, this finding was correlated with a reduction in triglyceride levels and systolic blood pressure.

“…Similar results have been reported by Habib et al in 50 patients 12 months after GBP [95] and by Saleh et al in 47 patients 10 months after GBP [96]. Sarmiento et al confirmed a reduction of carotid intima-media thickness in 18 patients 12 months after GBP [97]. Finally, Nerla et al reported an improvement of brachial flow-mediated dilation 3 months after surgery for obesity in 50 patients [98].…”

“…In agreement with various studies (Table 3) showing that the reduction in CIMT correlates with the magnitude of weight loss achieved after bariatric surgery (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16), our linear regression analysis found that CIMT decreased 0.005 mm per kilogram of weight lost. At 3-year follow-up, CIMT values in our bariatric surgery cohort were similar to those observed in our lean control group.…”

“…Anthropometric and CIMT measurements at follow-up Table 2 compares baseline measurements with those obtained at 3-year follow-up in participants who underwent bariatric surgery and in those treated with the nonsurgical approach. In participants treated with bariatric surgery, anthropometric measurements and CVFRs improved significantly; decreases were observed in mean FRS (15 [10][11][12][13][14][15][16] (Figure 1). In participants with obesity treated with the nonsurgical approach, no improvements were observed in BMI, anthropometric measurements, laboratory parameters, CIMT, or 10-year coronary heart disease risk, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and fasting blood glucose were significantly higher at follow-up.…”

“…The assessment of the carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) was performed only in A-T patients in a blinded fashion by a single examiner who used Doppler Ultrasonography (Medison equipment, Accuvix V10 model with linear transducer of high frequency of 6 - 12 MHz). A short length no longer than 0,5 cm of the distal common carotid artery was chosen, at a distance of 1 cm from the bulb, in which three equidistant measurements of cIMT were taken from the far wall and mean values were considered [ 23 ].…”
